Another Country

What would lead a man to betray his country? What would lead a boy to betray his friends? In Julian Mitchell’s award-winning Another Country, which won an Olivier Award for Play of the Year and helped launch the careers of Kenneth Branagh, Daniel Day-Lewis, Rupert Everett and Colin Firth, these questions become fatally entwined.

Another Country follows a company of public schoolboys through a summer term in the early 1930s where Bennett and Judd are both outsiders; one coming to terms with his homosexuality, the other already a committed Marxist. But the Establishment has traditional ways of dealing with rebels and when a scandal rocks the school, the young men must confront their beliefs and make choices which will have a momentous impact on their lives and on the future of their country.

Another Country balances subtle wit and thought-provoking drama in a fictionalised account of the youth of such people as the spy Guy Burgess and the Communist John Cornford, who died in the Spanish Civil War.

Rowan Polonski completes the cast in the role of Fowler. He has just finished filming ‘Secret Service’ with director Matthew Vaughn for Marv Films. This is his professional and West End debut.

Leigh Zimmerman will join the cast of Theatre Royal Bath Productions’ Relative Values as it transfers to the Harold Pinter Theatre, Wednesday 19th March to Saturday 21st June 2014, in the role of Miranda Frayle. Leigh is known all over the world for her leading roles on stage, in the West End and on Broadway, and in TV and film. Most recently she won the 2013 Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her performance as Sheila in A Chorus Line (Palladium) and appeared with Domenick Allen in A Love Affair from A2Z (St. James Theatre).

Steven Pacey will return in the role of Peter. He was most recently in King Lear (Chichester), Charley’s Aunt (Menier Chocolate Factory) and Spamalot (UK Tour). 

Also returning to the production from Bath are Timothy Kightley as Admiral Sir John Hayling (The Kitchen, Royal Court; Arcadia, National Theatre; Nicholas Nickleby, West End, Broadway, Los Angeles), Amanda Boxer as Lady Cynthia Hayling (Speed Twins, Riverside Studios, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, West Yorkshire Playhouse; Long Voyage Home, Old Vic Tunnels), Sam Hoare as Nigel (Adventure Story, Chichester; ‘Blandings’ and ‘Dancing on The Edge’, BBC) and Rebecca Birch as Alice (Healthy Wealth, Old Vic New Voices; Pygmalion, Chichester/West End).
