    Theatre's Unsung Heroes

When you're watching an amazing West End musical, it's so easy to be drawn in by the performers on the stage that you forget all the people working so hard behind the scenes.

To make a show so spectacular, it takes a lot of hard work regarding effects, props, costumes and also scenery to create the outstanding illusions in the theatres. Some shows, such as Les Miserables, rely heavily on the set to tell the story, for example the barricade on which a lot of major scenes are performed. The time, effort and expertise invested in these aspects really help to transport you into the stories. Other shows that rely on the set being very specific include Billy Elliott (the mining shaft sinking under the stage), Miss Saigon (the club and the gates) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the factory is just incredible).

Another large part of a production is the props. These are little extra objects that just enhance the scenes and make them more realistic. One of the most obvious shows that couldn't function without a prop is War Horse. The horse, Joey, is utterly amazing and it's easy to think it's actually a real horse, not one moved by people! The prop makes the show so incredible and is the most important aspect.

The final group of people I feel we need to acknowledge is the costume team for all these splendid productions. The costumes for many of the west end shows are very extravagant and require a lot of work. A few shows that include brilliant costumes are Kinky Boots, Cats, The Lion King and Gypsy.

So next time you go to the theatre, take a moment to appreciate all the hard work that has gone into making a fulfilling and unforgettable experience for all the audience members.
