SKY 3D TO SCREEN MATTHEW BOURNE'S SWAN LAKE AS BBC SIGNS DEAL WITH ROH

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake is to be broadcast as a special presentation on Sky 3D. The Sadler's Wells favourite which premiered in 1995 will be filmed at the venue for a broadcast later this year. Meanwhile, the BBC has announced a new joint venture to screen content by the Royal Opera House.

Sky 3D director John Cassy announced “Matthew Bourne’s production has fast become one of the most iconic productions of this ballet and we’re delighted to be able to broadcast it in 3D. Performance is one of the most exciting genres for 3D – and the depth of feel that 3D is able to offer to dance productions on screen is truly thrilling. It sounds clichéd, but it really does feel as if you’re there.”

Todd Austin, chief creative officer of Leopard Films who will be filming the production said, “This exciting event marks the first production from our new arts division and Leopard Films’ first 3D project.”

The BBC has signed an exclusive partnership with the Royal Opera House in which both partners will co-produce content specifically created for a television audience.

Several new commissions will go ahead in 2012 in which the content will be shown on television before being performed on stage.

The BBC announced that the partnership will “see a greater mix of programmes on television, including documentaries on opera and ballet as well as productions giving audiences an insight into what goes into getting a new work to the stage”.

BBC music and events commissioning editor, Jan Younghusband said, “This is a hugely exciting development for both organisations. We have enjoyed a strong relationship over many years now and this new creative relationship means we will not only continue to bring great performance to the viewers but co-commission new work with the Royal Opera House especially for TV.”

The first new project will be a broadcast of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a new ballet choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, with music by Joby Talbot. The production is set to ait on BBC2 later this month.
