Sometimes, the unlikeliest of events can be the inspiration for a phenomenon. Who would have thought, for instance, that a show based on an unsuccessful two-day uprising in France, not even the big revolution everyone’s heard of, would turn into the world’s longest-running musical?
There’s something a bit special about shows based on true stories, I think. They bring history to life in a way no textbook ever could, by putting a human face on events we might otherwise know little or nothing about. (I’ve successfully answered more than one pub quiz question about Vietnam thanks to Miss Saigon.) So, here are seven shows that are currently booking in the West End, all based on real events.
Kenrex
This crime drama, playing at The Other Palace, is based on a true story from Missouri. Blending crime with western themes, it’s an intense but stunning play inspired by events in 1981, as a community takes back control amidst a wave of crimes.

Just For One Day
The most iconic music event of all time has, rightly so,been turned into an epic musical production. Featuring songs by legends including Bob Dylan, David Bowie, The Who, U2, Queen, and Madonna, this joyous and uplifting show tells the story of the lead-up to the event that changed music forever.
Les Misérables
The ultimate musical—a sweeping story of love, loss, injustice, and revolution. Les Misérables has been seen by over 130 million people in 53 countries across the world (including me, more times than I can count!). It’s set during the failed student uprising in Paris in 1832.
MJ The Musical
The Tony Award and Olivier Award-winning musical tells the story of the King of Pop during his Dangerous World Tour, exploring his struggles and the price of fame. The show is packed with epic dance moves, and, of course, his most iconic tracks.
Six the Musical
One of the most famous stories in English history has been turned into a global phenomenon: Six the Musical. But this isn’t the story you think you know, it’s told from the perspective of the six wives of Henry VIII. You’ve heard their names; now it’s time to hear their stories.
Hamilton
Wait for it…! The musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda set the world alight when it first opened. This revolutionary (pun intended) show tells the real-life story of the least well-known Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton, and his influence on American politics and the Revolution. Set to R&B and hip-hop, it has become one of the most iconic true stories in modern musical theatre.
Kinky Boots
And finally, Kinky Boots, opening in March and starring Johannes Radebe, with music by Cyndi Lauper. The show charts the fortunes of Charlie Price, who comes up with a unique way to save his family's struggling shoe factory. And yes—it’s based on a true story.
