6 West End Shows That Need To Be Hollywood Movies

All of us around these parts can agree: theatre will always be our first love. We can’t deny the magic of movies – especially movie musicals, which come in at a close second. From modern hits like Wicked and Hamilton to musical staples like Singin’ In The Rain, it is hard to imagine a world without them… but let’s be honest, we secretly are craving more. So I’ve put together a list of West End shows that are just dying for their big-screen Hollywood debut.

Six
At the top of our list is the electrifying musical Six. Performing at the Vaudeville Theatre, you don’t want to miss out on this hilarious and extraordinary show. I’ve seen Six thrice while it was playing, and whenever I think back on it, I can’t help but think of the beautiful costume design paired with jaw-dropping vocals. This is the quintessential girl power vibe! I need to see this on the big screen. Audiences worldwide need to see this energetic performance showing the six wives of Henry VIII. It checks off all the boxes: catchy pop songs, stunning visuals and fierce dance moves. It would make for an amazing feel-good movie for the summer.

Hamilton
If you haven't had a chance to catch the Hamilton musical in the West End, then let me tell you. It’s a masterpiece and an absolute game-changer. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical has redefined the rules of a musical. The mix of hip-hop and traditional Broadway keeps you on your toes. The electric characters would steal the show; the choreography and storytelling need to be brought to the screen. This is the new way of learning about America's Founding Fathers with a modern twist. Just imagine King George and George Washington with sweeping wide shots – Hamilton as a movie would be an iconic visual feast.

Starlight Express
This Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock-inspired show is a world of fantasy where the stakes are high, the music is blasting, and the action never stops. This high-speed, high-energy rollercoaster of a musical is guaranteed to leave you in awe. Imagine this coming to the screen with visual effects and non-stop stunts; this could be the perfect underdog story.

Punch
Punch is a raw, emotional show about consequences. Based on Jacob Dunne’s memoir Right from Wrong, this play will show how a single punch changes everything for the aggressor, the victim, and the witnesses. Rooted in Nottingham, this powerful show confronts feelings of guilt, remorse, justice and the weight of consequences. Adapting Punch to a Hollywood movie would leave everyone wrestling long after the final scene.

Carmen
Hollywood is known for their legendary romance movies. This is where Carmen comes in. This is a fierce story of Carmen navigating a world of military oppression, violence and desire. Set in modern Spain, this musical romance follows an independent woman as she navigates the military with the energy of a thriller, as Don Jose’s obsession grows stronger. It is exactly the kind of daring adaptation Hollywood needs right now

The Play That Goes Wrong
Chaos and unstoppable laughter will turn The Play That Goes Wrong into comedy gold. After attempting to stage a murder mystery, everything that can go wrong goes wrong. Misplaced props, forgetting lines and actors trying to fuse it all together. A Hollywood adaptation would capture the silly energy and cinematic flair, complemented by British charm.
